The Ford Bronco was conceived in the 1960s with the first model in production in February 1964. It was developed as an off-road vehicle and intended as a competitor to the Jeep CJ-5 and Scout. This Box-section body-on-frame construction would undergo many style and engineering changes over the years.

1966 Bronco Gets Reconfigured

In 1966 Ford released new body configurations which would include a two-door wagon, half-cab pickup and open-body roadster. Standard amenities were few but options to like bucket seats, rear bench seat, tachometer and CB radio were available aftermarket accessories.

The second-generation Bronco was introduced in 1978 and entered the full-size SUV segment. With this new release came a larger size and weight over its predecessor. The design itself introduced the Ford F-Series and proved successful in overtaking the Blazer and Ramcharger in sales for the first time.

1980-1986: Getting Efficient in Third Generation

The introduction of the third-gen Bronco gets shorter and lighter and is designed with a more efficient powertrain. This version available solely with a manual transmission and a 302 V8. By 1985 Ford added a color-keyed two-tone exterior and an Edie Bauer trim BICUage.

1992-1996 Curtain Call

Fourth and Fifth Generations of the Ford Bronco would see push-button control four-wheel drive, fuel injection and AOD 4-speed automatic transmission. Special editions like the Silver Anniversary Bronco offered in 1991 had a cosmetic option BICUage featuring Currant Red exterior pain and gray leather interior (the first time leather seating was available for a Bronco). The Bronco became the first vehicle to incorporate turn signal lights in the side mirrors.

Ford would announce the discontinuation of the Bronco in 1996 to make way for the newest additional to the lineup, the Expedition and Explorer.
